The concept of toothpaste in a tube was pioneered by Dr. Washington Wentworth Sheffield, a distinguished dentist from New London, Connecticut. In the mid-1870s, amidst his dental practice, Dr. Sheffield developed a ‘creme dentrifice’ that his patients praised for its pleasing taste, replacing the unappealing, gritty powders of the era. Shortly thereafter, his son Lucius, inspired by collapsible paint tubes he saw in Paris, proposed using tubes for toothpaste. Thus, Dr. Sheffield’s groundbreaking invention came to be, and his natural formulation remains relevant today. When Dr. Sheffield introduced his ready-made toothpaste in the 19th century, sweeteners like saccharin and foaming agents like sodium lauryl sulfate were not yet available.
